Here's a cartoon at the height of Chuck Jones' "gentle" phase. Like the color Sniffles cartoons of the same period, Jones puts a small character in a big place, with objects that are easily recognizable to us appearing foreign to the character. This cartoon is at times painfully slow, and there aren't too many "gags"...but you have to admire the artistry of it. The film opens with a little blotch of light flittering into an open tent at a camp site. it turns out to be the title character, a bug with a fireman's hat and a little glowing lantern. He lands on the head of a sleeping man in the tent, and begins exploring the facial features as though they are mountainous formations. He goes down from there, from the head to the nose, and then he goes down on top of the big guy's body. Joe Glow explores the hands, fingers, and gets spooked by a wristwatch. He decides he's had enough of this, so he flies up onto a table and starts exploring the various things on it. He checks out a Swiss army knife, a few bottles, and ultimately gets curious about the big overturned can of table salt. He opens the lid and gets flooded with salt. He nearly knocks a ketchup bottle off the table, but quickly grabs a piece of string and lassos it before it hits and wakes the man up. He has trouble with a pepper shaker too...he gets stuck inside until he sneezes himself out, shooting him across the tent and getting his little lantern stuck under the lid of the shaker. He decides to check out the man again...and since there's nothing more to see, he gently lands on the guy's ear, and utters the only line of the entire film, a loud "good night!!!" The cartoon ends just as it began, with the ball of light buzzing around outside the tent. Like I said, it's not particularly fast and funny, but it's visually stunning. It would be a sin to colorize it, because it has some of the best use of black and white the Warner Bros. cartoons ever did...instead of just making a cartoon in black and white, Jones uses it to an artistic advantage, and was clearly exploring the medium. It just looks cool!

Betty, Koko, and Bimbo drive at the auto races; Betty has a cold, and her sneezes help her win.

Betty Boop is an animated cartoon character created by Max Fleischer, with help from animators including Grim Natwick. She originally appeared in the Talkartoon and Betty Boop film series, which were produced by Fleischer Studios and released by Paramount Pictures. She has also been featured in comic strips and mass merchandising.

A caricature of a Jazz Age flapper, Betty Boop was described in a 1934 court case as: "combin[ing] in appearance the childish with the sophisticated—a large round baby face with big eyes and a nose like a button, framed in a somewhat careful coiffure, with a very small body of which perhaps the leading characteristic is the most self-confident little bust imaginable". Although she was toned down in the mid-1930s as a result of the Hays Code to appear more demure, Betty Boop became one of the best-known and popular cartoon.

Out of the Inkwell was a major animated series of the silent era produced by Max Fleischer from 1918 to 1929. The series was the result of three short experimental films that Max Fleischer independently produced in the period of 1914--1916 to demonstrate his invention, the Rotoscope, which was a device consisting of a film projector and easel used as an aid for achieving realistic movement for animated cartoons. The Rotoscope would project motion picture film through an opening in the easel, covered by a glass pane serving as a drawing surface. The image on the projected film was traced onto paper, advancing the film one frame at a time as each drawing would be made. Fleischer's younger brother Dave Fleischer was working as a clown at Coney Island, and served as the model for what was to become their first famous character that later evolved as "Koko the Clown."

Felix the Cat is a funny animal cartoon character created in the silent film era. The anthropomorphic black cat with his black body, white eyes, and giant grin, coupled with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, combine to make Felix one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences.[1][2]

Felix's origins remain disputed. Australian cartoonist/film entrepreneur Pat Sullivan, owner of the Felix character, claimed during his lifetime to be its creator. American animator Otto Messmer, Sullivan's lead animator, has been credited as such.[3] What is certain is that Felix emerged from Sullivan's studio, and cartoons featuring the character enjoyed success and popularity in 1920s popular culture. Aside from the animated shorts, Felix starred in a comic strip (drawn by Sullivan, Messmer and later Joe Oliolo) beginning in 1923,[4] and his image soon adorned merchandise such as ceramics, toys and postcards. Several manufacturers made stuffed Felix toys. Jazz bands such as Paul Whiteman's played songs about him (1923's "Felix Kept On Walking" and others).

Have You Got Any Castles? is a seven-minute animated short film released to theaters by Warner Bros. on June 25, 1938. Directed by Frank Tashlin, the film was a part of the Merrie Melodies series produced by Leon Schlesinger and distributed by Vitaphone. It was re-issued into the "Blue Ribbon Classics" series on February 1, 1947, with the question mark removed from the title. The plot of the film centers around characters from well-known works of fiction coming to life in a library whose owner has just closed the facility for the night.

When the cartoon opens, the cuckoo clock in the library sounds, and the camera pans over the library, to the aforementioned Town Crier who gives a brief introduction. After this, we meet four monsters (Mr. Hyde, Fu Manchu, the Phantom of the Opera, and Frankenstein's monster) who introduce themselves roaring, but then dance briefly to Gossec's "Gavotte." As characters from other books cheer them on, the globe-shaped protagonist of The Good Earth prays by his bedside. The library is panned over to the right, revealing the books The Invisible Man with an invisible man dancing, Topper (a novel from a series by Thorne Smith, as well as a film series) with a similar theme, The Thirty-Nine Steps with a caricature of "Bojangles" Robinson dancing down the steps, So Big with a caricature of Greta Garbo, and The Green Pastures which turns out to feature a big band presentation of "Swing for Sale" led by a caricature of Cab Calloway.

Somewhere in Dreamland was a 1936 film based on the titular song. This film was part of Max Fleischer's Color Classics series.

Directors: Dave Fleischer, Seymour Kneitel (uncredited)
Stars: Mae Questel, Gus Wickie

A young brother and sister carry a wagon through town, gathering wood planks and logs for their home stove. They pass by five merchants' shops: a tinker's, a tailor's, a toy merchant's, a butcher's, and a baker's. The children stop for a moment, to admire the confectioneries in the window. They lick the window to pretend they're tasting the cupcakes. As he sees the children, a friendly baker goes inside, and comes back with cupcakes for them, but the children have already left. The merchants gather to make a plan, because they want to help those poor children. The children reach home, and they are welcomed by their mother with a kiss. They sit down to supper: hard bread and flat water. The children eat quickly, with the boy saying "But I'm still hungry, Ma." She then cries, because they are very poor, due to the Great Depression. The boy tries to make her feel better by assuring her that he was "only foolin'" and their mother kisses them goodnight. They get in their pajamas, and they each sing a part of the song, as they fall asleep beneath their very tattered sheets. The mother extinguishes the candle light, and sadly retires for the night.

In their sleep, they enter a land with a welcome sign, an arch of pillows with the word "Dreamland". They happily frolic through the wondrous land, which includes trees where they can pick beautiful clothes and shoes, a syrup river, an ice cream cone field with lilies pouring chocolate and caramel syrups, an animal cracker carousel, a field of popcorn-making corn stalks accompanied by literal buttercups to dip the popcorn in, wonderful toys, and two luxurious beds. They laugh happily, and fall asleep, only to wake up the next morning. To their surprise, a large feast is on the kitchen table, as well as toys and clothing surrounding the room, all of which was provided by the Merchants. The children look up to the kind merchants, asking twice if all these things are for them. The merchants nod and reply "All for you, yes!" The children shout in joy, and begin to eat. The boy, however, suspicious of this good fortune, sticks a fork in his bottom to ensure they aren't just dreaming again (they're not). The children laugh and continue to eat, as the chorus "Somewhere in dreamland, tonight" plays.

Lady, Play Your Mandolin! is the first Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies title card cartoon, directed by Rudolf Ising of Harman and Ising. It was originally released in August 1931.

The cartoon features Foxy as a gaucho who decides to visit a local saloon. His horse soon finds himself drunk on tequila and begins to hallucinate wildly. Similarly to Foxy, the cartoon features a female fox character that is very reminiscent of Minnie Mouse.

As was typically the case with the early entries in the Merrie Melodies series, one purpose of the cartoon was to promote a Warner-owned popular song. The title theme, written by Oscar Levant with lyrics by Irving Caesar, was a 1930 #5 pop hit sung by Nick Lucas and released by Brunswick Records, which had been purchased by Warner Brothers the previous year (Another recording, by the Havana Novelty Orchestra was released the same year on RCA's Victor Records). In the short, it is sung by a female fox character who would later become Foxy's girlfriend, Roxy.

The credited animators were Rollin "Ham" Hamilton and Norm Blackburn (plus uncredited animation by Isadore Freleng, Robert Clampett (his first cartoon at WB according to some sources) and Carman Maxwell) with a musical score and direction of the Brunswick Recording Orchestra by Frank Marsales.

Felix the Cat is a funny-animal cartoon character created in the silent film era. The anthropomorphic black cat with his black body, white eyes, and giant grin, coupled with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons place him, combine to make Felix one of the most recognized cartoon characters in film history. Felix was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity sufficient to draw movie audiences.

Private Snafu is the title character of a series of black-and-white American instructional cartoon shorts produced between 1943 and 1945 during World War II. The character was created by director Frank Capra, chairman of the U.S. Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit, and most were written by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, Philip D. Eastman, and Munro Leaf.[1] Although the United States Army gave Walt Disney the first crack at creating the cartoons, Leon Schlesinger of the Warner Bros. animation studio underbid Disney by two-thirds and won the contract. Disney had also demanded exclusive ownership of the character, and merchandising rights. Nel 2007 shows the goal was to help enlisted men with weak literacy skills learn through animated cartoons (and also supplementary comic books). They featured simple language, racy illustrations, mild profanity, and subtle moralizing. Private Snafu did everything wrong, so that his negative example taught basic lessons about secrecy, disease prevention, and proper military protocols.

A door to door salesman visits Betty Boop's home with a long line of useless household gadgets.

Bluto muscles out Popeye to take Olive to the fair. Popeye rushes ahead and poses as a fortune teller, luring Olive in. He shows Olive her future (actually, her past) in the crystal ball: first, a clip of a mountain climbing sequence that culminates in Bluto assaulting Olive. Then, a clip from another amusement park showing strongman Bluto stealing Olive away to a roller-coaster while Popeye rings a strength-testing bell repeatedly. Olive, having seen this, no longer wants anything to do with Bluto and walks out. Bluto exposes Popeye and chases Olive into a Tunnel of Love; Popeye follows and trashes Bluto.

It's Got Me Again! is a Warner Bros. Merrie Melodies animated short film. It was originally released on May 13, 1932. It is one of the first films released under the Merrie Melodies brand and it was nominated for the Academy Award for animation in 1932. The title refers to the song It's Got Me Again! (music by Bernice Petkere, lyrics by Irving Caesar) which plays during the cartoon.

The cartoon depicts a tribe of cartoon mice who move and dance through a room filled with musical instruments, while the song It's Got Me Again! plays on a gramophone. When a hungry cat shows up and tries to eat the mice, most of them escape—but one mouse is trapped. Luckily, he is rescued by the others, who turn their musical instruments as weapons against the cat.

The Ducktators is a Looney Tunes black and white cartoon that was produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions and was released in 1942 by Warner Bros.. Directed by Norman McCabe, the cartoon satirizes various events of World War II. The title is a pun on dictator.

The cartoon takes place on a farm, beginning with a few ducks, geese and chickens being shown. After a brief few moments, two ducks (who are expecting a duckling) go over to their unusually black-colored egg as it starts to hatch. Once the egg has hatched, a duckling with an Adolf Hitler mustache emerges and yells "Sieg Heil!" while giving the Nazi salute.

FDR is depicted as a modern streamlined steam locomotive, the "Win the War Special", pulling a high-speed freight train of war material, whereas his opponent, Thomas E. Dewey, is depicted as an old creaky steam locomotive, the "Defeatist Limited" pulling cars variously representing hot air, high prices, taxes, business as usual ( a sleeper car), poor housing for war workers, a hearse wagon for labor legislation, a small two wheel cart with just a few apples inside for unemployment insurance, and finally a caboose named "Jim Crow."

It was directed by Bob Clampett, written by Frank Tashlin, animated by Robert McKimson and released as part of the Merrie Melodies series on September 25, 1943. A parody of Disney's 1940 feature Fantasia, the film uses two of Johann Strauss' best known waltzes, Tales from the Vienna Woods and The Blue Danube, adapted by the cartoon unit's music director, Carl Stalling and orchestrated by its arranger and later, Stalling's successor, Milt Franklyn. Long considered a classic for its sly humor and impeccable timing with the music, it was voted #47 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field in 1994. The title, in tune with the name of the unit's other cartoon series, Looney Tunes, suggests another Disney titling parody, that of the pioneering series Silly Symphonies.

After an excruciating session, Moe enters his classroom to tell Shemp that his uncle had died and left him an inheritance of five hundred thousand dollars. Shemp cannot collect the money unless he is married (which horrifies Shemp) within 48 hours after the reading of the will. Shemp uses his filled-up black address book to propose to any and all women he has, with unsuccessful results. With only six hours to get married, Moe and Larry lead Shemp through a series of disastrous situations including the destruction of a phone booth and Shemp being beaten silly by a woman named Miss Hopkins (Christine McIntyre) who had just moved into the building.

-Sing a Song of Six Pants (1947)-
The Stooges run a tailor shop that is about to be repossessed by the Skin and Flint Finance Corporation. When the Boys hear about a big reward for fugitive bank robber 'Terry "Slippery Fingers" Hargan' (Harold Brauer), they think that catching him might end their financial woes. Hargan conveniently ducks into their shop as the officer enters and leaves a suit with a safe combination in its pocket. After his girlfriend (Virginia Hunter) fails to retrieve the combination, Hargan returns with his henchmen, and a wild mêlée follows. The Stooges miss out on the reward but wind up with the crook's bankroll to pay off their debts.

-Malice in the Palace 1949-
The Stooges, while running the Cafe Casbah Bah (a Middle Eastern restaurant) and attempting to prepare a meal for customers Hassan Ben Sober (Vernon Dent) and Ginna Rumma (George J. Lewis), discover a plan that their hungry customers are hatching. These two thieves are attempting to rob the tomb of King Rootintootin, which contains a priceless diamond, but they discover that the emir of Schmow (Johnny Kascier) has already gotten his hands on the diamond. The two plotters start wailing and are thrown out of the restaurant. The Stooges then attempt to retrieve the diamond themselves, as there is a $50,000 reward at stake.
