Henry, comic strip character, gets a job at Betty Boop's pet store.

Betty Boop is an animated cartoon character created by Max Fleischer, with help from animators including Grim Natwick. She originally appeared in the Talkartoon and Betty Boop film series, which were produced by Fleischer Studios and released by Paramount Pictures. She has also been featured in comic strips and mass merchandising.

A caricature of a Jazz Age flapper, Betty Boop was described in a 1934 court case as: "combin[ing] in appearance the childish with the sophisticated—a large round baby face with big eyes and a nose like a button, framed in a somewhat careful coiffure, with a very small body of which perhaps the leading characteristic is the most self-confident little bust imaginable". Although she was toned down in the mid-1930s as a result of the Hays Code to appear more demure, Betty Boop became one of the best-known and popular cartoon.

Blow me Down! is a Popeye theatrical cartoon short, starring William "Billy" Costello as Popeye and Bonnie Poe as Olive Oyl and Charles Lawrence as Wimpy. It was released in 1933 and was a third cartoon in the Popeye the Sailor series of theatrical cartoons released by Paramount Pictures, lasting through 1957.

Popeye sails into Mexico, where Olive is a dancer and Bluto is a bandit.

Draftee Porky shows "America's Defense Effort," a war newsreel full of military secrets. This cartoon rallies American public support for the war production of tanks, planes and big guns. It promotes the draft while slamming anti-draft politics. It mentions British Spitfire aircraft, but also the importance of American design improvements to it. A politically incorrect scene shows a driver in blackface who speaks in a stereotyped manner. The cartoon strongly suggests that the United States mainland is threatened with direct attack. Several scenes show 1941 newspaper headlines, including one about a strike at the Ford Motor Company's plant in Dearborn, Michigan.

Confusions of a Nutzy Spy is an early 1943 Looney Tunes cartoon starring Porky Pig. It is a World War II propaganda film that deals with Porky and his bloodhound that has sneezing problems trying to track down a Nazi spy caricature in the form of a lynx. Their goal is to stop him from blowing up a critical railroad bridge. It was directed by Norman McCabe. The title is a pun of the film title Confessions of a Nazi Spy.

Private Snafu is the title character of a series of black-and-white American instructional cartoon shorts produced between 1943 and 1945 during World War II. The character was created by director Frank Capra, chairman of the U.S. Army Air Force First Motion Picture Unit, and most were written by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, Philip D. Eastman, and Munro Leaf.[1] Although the United States Army gave Walt Disney the first crack at creating the cartoons, Leon Schlesinger of the Warner Bros. animation studio underbid Disney by two-thirds and won the contract. Disney had also demanded exclusive ownership of the character, and merchandising rights. Nel 2007 shows the goal was to help enlisted men with weak literacy skills learn through animated cartoons (and also supplementary comic books). They featured simple language, racy illustrations, mild profanity, and subtle moralizing. Private Snafu did everything wrong, so that his negative example taught basic lessons about secrecy, disease prevention, and proper military protocols.

Snafuperman is a 1944 animated short comedy produced by Warner Brothers Pictures and directed by Friz Freleng. It is one of a series of black and white "Private Snafu" cartoons created for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine and shown only to American soldiers. The "Private Snafu" cartoons were not released commercially, until December 2010. The cartoon's title is a play on "Superman".

The Spirit of '43 is an American animated World War II propaganda film created by Walt Disney Studios in 1942 and released in January 1943. The film stars Donald Duck, and arguably contains the first appearance of the character Scrooge McDuck, although Scrooge is not named in the film. It is a sequel to The New Spirit. The purpose of the film is to encourage patriotic Americans to file and pay their income taxes faithfully in order to help the war effort. The repeated theme in the film is "Taxes...To Defeat the Axis."

In the film, Donald Duck is portrayed as an everyman who has just received his weekly pay. He is met by two physical manifestations of his personality — the classic "good angel on one shoulder, bad devil on the other shoulder" dilemma common to cartoons of the time — identified as the "thrifty saver" and the "spendthrift."

The "good duck" appears as a slightly elderly duck with a Scottish accent who wears a kilt and Scottish cap and urges Donald to be thrifty with his money so he can be sure to pay his taxes for the war effort. The "bad duck" appears as a zoot suit-wearing hipster who urges Donald to spend his duly earned money on idle pleasures such as "good dates". The good angel reminds of other "dates" - the dates when his taxes are due. (In the 1940s, income taxes were paid directly by workers every three months and not directly removed from employee paychecks as is done today.) The narrator explains that Americans should "gladly and proudly" pay their income taxes which are higher that year "thanks to Hitler and Hirohito."

A tug-of-war ensues between "spend" and "save" with Donald caught in the middle. Eventually the two sides give way and crash on opposite ends of Donald to reveal the "true" selves: the doors of the bad duck's club are revealed to be swastikas and the bad duck himself turns out to bear a resemblance to Hitler (his bow tie is now a swastika and he has grown Hitler's characteristic mustache), while the wall the good duck has crashed up against resembles the flag of the United States. The narrator then asks the audience if they are going to "spend for the Axis" or "save for taxes". Having made the seemingly obvious choice, Donald is assumed to shake hands with the bad duck, but it is revealed that he heads over to the bad duck to punch him out at the last second. He then goes to proudly pay his taxes with the good duck.

The second part of the film is a montage entirely recycled from The New Spirit, showing how the taxes are being used to make planes, bombs, ships, and other war materials. It then shows them being used against Axis forces, along with the repeated slogan "Taxes...to (bury, sink, etc.) the Axis", accompanied by the opening bars of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (the "V for Victory" theme).

Daffy Duck is a commando, dropped behind enemy lines, and causes havoc to the German commander, Von Vulture, who tries to capture him. With the aid of modern technology, we reveal the unknown behaviour of some unusual species of sharks: lemon sharks and their white-tip reef counterparts. Our film trip begins on the Bahamas. To be more precise: in the turquoise-blue waters of the Grand Bahama Bank, in an exactly fixed location. In spring, 70 - 80 pregnant lemon sharks arrive here. This huge shark population was first discovered just a few years ago by shark researcher, Professor Sam Gruber. Many of the females are tired and rest on the seabed. Pregnant tiger sharks swim in the midst of this group. Without any protection whatsoever, our cameramen shoot their footage, surrounded by sharks and succeed in capturing images hitherto unseen.
We continue our journey to Gainesville, Florida, to meet Gordon Hubbell, the leading shark denture expert with the world’s largest shark denture collection. He knows everything about the evolutionary history of the lemon sharks, in addition to those of the white-tip reef variety off Cocos Island, Costa Rica. Here, we encounter large schools of fish, unprecedented numbers of stingrays, as well as hammerhead sharks. However, it is the white-tip reek sharks that make the biggest impression. Their performance begins late at night. Marauding, they patrol in large groups through the reefs and hunt everything that moves. Scales and dead prey fish float above the reef - a welcoming change of diet for the ubiquitous barracudas.

There are "predators lurking" as stone fish, cleverly disguising themselves to wait for unsuspecting prey which wander too close. In an episode that illustrates the Race of Life in an underwater world of dangerous predators with razor-sharp teeth, we will see sharks, barracuda and moray eels go about their grisly business. Underwater predators have adapted some fairly extreme measures to hunt and to survive. The fish of the reef need to be fast to escape the barracuda, with its lightning speed and pincushion teeth. And stay on the alert when they swim near the lairs of the moray eel, a large and lethal creature of perhaps surprising grace and beauty. They may be ambushed by the also elegant - but deadly – lionfish. The knitting needle spines of the lionfish are capable of injecting deadly venom. Or if equally unlucky, prey can be sucked into the huge mouth of a stonefish. With so many hungry mouths to feed, it’s a jungle down there.

The family of the jellyfish or medusae are not only the most venomous ocean inhabitants but also some of the deepest divers. Medusae have been found as deep as 8.300 meters. Their existence is paramount to the oceans. Many of the large migrations of fish and mammals would not be possible without the existence of jellies. They are a crucial part of the food chain, many fish feed on jellies and in turn mammals or larger migratory predators feed on fish.The scientist Gerhard Jarms of the Zoological Institute of the University of Hamburg takes us on a journey into the exotic world of jellyfish. He is one of the most renowned medusae scientists in the world. Our expedition begins in the northern Atlantic where we will find the mysterious periphylla. We will continue on to the Azores in the Atlantic. There we will search for the XY jellies that seek shelter in caves in rough seas.

Squids & Octopuses - Mysterious Hunters of the Deep Sea | Ocean Documentary

Octopuses and squids are anything but cuddly pets. They have neither legs nor fins. Instead, they have snakelike arms, covered in suction caps - eight or ten, dangerous tentacles, which grow out of their heads. To add to their bizarre appearance, they are soft flabby, void of vertebrae or bones. When in danger, they emit foul-smelling ink. They originate from a time before humans walked the earth; from the primeval period, before fish populated the oceans. It is therefore hardly surprising, that these cephalopods seem so strange and disconcerting to us.

Our film trip takes us to the Sea of Cortez, to the Socorro Islands, where fish are in abundance. It is here that we want to find the legendary Humboldt squid, to capture its nocturnal hunt for food on camera. Mantas, white-tip reef sharks, sea lions and dolphins accompany us. Before our late night rendezvous with the squids, we get some close ups of the sophisticated hunting techniques of swordfish, or Merlin.
On Vancouver Island, we accompany Karen Palmer and David Pickles, experts on giant octopi, on their search for the eight-armed cephalo-pods. We are also on hand, when they greeted by their "favourites", witnesses to a unique communication between man and animal.

The ice-cold Humboldt Current from Antarctica brought animals to the Galapagos which would normally just exist in cold regions. It dominates one half of the year. The other half of the year, the warm, tropical Panama Current reigns over the remote, ancient islands and brings its own animals with it. These powerful currents alternate every six months, inverting life in the Galapagos!

Long massacred by whaling ships, sperm whales were almost driven to extinction. Saved when whale hunting ceased in the 1980s, the largest predators on the planet had, until then, always been studied from the surface, allowing their life beneath the seas to remain a mystery.
For the first time, a team of scientific divers has literally become immersed in the day to day life of a clan of cetaceans. Off the coast of Mauritius, over a period of 7 years, they shared the fascinating lives of the clan and tried to unravel the mysteries of their communication using a specifically designed recording device.
Witnesses to moments of intimacy that had never before seen, from the exchanges between a mother and her newborn, to the relationship between the latter and its "nurse", they aimed to decipher the secrets of the whales' dialect and those of the complex relationships forged within this astonishing cohesive, matriarchal society.

The Elbe is one of the major rivers of Central Europe. It rises in the Giant Mountains of the northern Czech Republic before traversing much of Bohemia, then Germany and flowing into the North Sea at Cuxhaven, 110 kilometres northwest of Hamburg. Its total length is 1,094 km.

Geographically, the river can be divided into different sections: The Upper Elbe is the part from the source to about Riesa in the administrative district of Dresden, which is more characterized by mountains. The Middle Elbe, on the other hand, is a lowland river. It reaches as far as the Geesthacht dam just outside Hamburg.

The Lower Elbe is called the tidal part of the river. Here, the Elbe forms an estuary, a so-called estuary. At high tide, seawater enters this funnel-shaped delta at the mouth of the Elbe and mixes with the freshwater of the river. At low tide, the water then flows off to the North Sea. Finally, the continuation of the estuary funnel in the Wadden Sea is called the Outer Elbe.

Fire ants are several species of ants in the genus Solenopsis. They are, however, only a minority in the genus, which includes over 200 species of Solenopsis worldwide. Solenopsis are stinging ants, and most of their common names reflect this, for example, ginger ants and tropical fire ants. Many species also are called red ants because of their light brown color, though species of ants in many other genera are similarly named for similar reasons. Examples include Myrmica rubra and Pogonomyrmex barbatus.

The bodies of mature fire ants, like the bodies of all typical mature insects, are divided into three sections: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen, with three pairs of legs and a pair of antennae. Fire ants of those species invasive in the United States can be distinguished from other ants locally present by their copper brown head and thorax with a darker abdomen. The worker ants are blackish to reddish and their size varies from 2 to 6 mm (0.079 to 0.236 in). In an established nest these different sizes of ants are all present at the same time.

Although most fire ant species do not bother people and are not invasive, Solenopsis invicta, known in the United States as the red imported fire ant (or RIFA), is an invasive pest in many areas of the world, including the United States, Australia, China and Taiwan. The RIFA was believed to have been accidentally introduced to these countries via shipping crates, particularly with Australia when they were first found in Brisbane in 2001. These ants have now since been spotted in Sydney for the first time. They were believed to be in the Philippines, but they are most likely to be misidentified for Solenopsis geminata ants.

In the US, the FDA estimates that more than US$5 billion is spent annually on medical treatment, damage, and control in RIFA-infested areas. Furthermore, the ants cause approximately $750 million in damage annually to agricultural assets, including veterinarian bills and livestock loss, as well as crop loss. Over 40 million people live in RIFA-infested areas in the southeastern United States. It is estimated that 30–60% of the people living in fire ant-infested areas of the US are stung each year. RIFA are currently found mainly in subtropical southeastern USA states including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and parts of North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and California.

As if it were an ocean of golden sand, the Namib covers a large part of Namibia. It is the only desert on earth which reaches the ocean.

The Namib seems to be inhospitable but this impression deceives. The desert is home to the side winder snake the endemic Namib desert beetle and the desert elephants.

The Namib desert beetle for example uses the moisture of the clouds that drive inland from the sea. At the peak of the sand dunes he waits until the humidity condenses at his body. But this makes himself an attractive water supply for his enemies. The desert elephants are not only equipped with bigger ears than other elephants. They also walk on bigger feet to avoid sinking into the soft sand. The leading cow of the herd uses the oversized sensible feet to feel the vibrations of flowing water underneath the surface.

The Xinjiang Wetlands is home to hundreds of mute swans who migrate from Siberia to this place - that despite often subzero temperatures of -20° Celcius, the underground hot springs make it ideal for the swans, turning the waters into a Swan Lake. You almost expect them to turn in graceful ballet dances as dusk settles over the land.
Apart from this mystical Swan Lake, we visit the northernmost desert in China, home to the Singing Sand Mountains. The peaks are steep, and the sand ridges sharp as knives, randomly scattered. The sound made when the sand roars over the area can be heard for miles. The desert is dotted with as many as 113 lakes, of which 74 are filled with water all year round and 12 are freshwater lakes. A paradise for migrating birds.
We finish our journey on the ocean shores, by the Bohai Sea, where spotted seals live. Another superhero creature that can swim a marathon distance in under 90 minutes.

The Galapagos Islands – a small archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Its volcanic origins, predominant sparse vegetation and the extreme climatic conditions from the Tropics make survival a real challenge.

Despite all these circumstances, these islands are in fact home to many of our planet’s most unusual creatures. The English naturalist Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution by observing them. We know today why there are so many odd animals on the Galapagos Islands and that they did not certainly come voluntarily: most are actually shipwrecked or stranded by storms or strong ocean currents.

On this way, the Humboldt Current brought penguins to the Galapagos from Antarctica. In order to survive on these islands, the tuxedo-wearers managed to modify their bodies over the millennia. The Galapagos penguin is not just the only penguin capable of surviving in the Tropics; it is also the smallest penguin on earth. Barely larger than a duck, it is only through this miniaturisation that it has been able to withstand the tropical temperatures.

A similar evolutionary masterstroke has been witnessed with the Galapagos cormorant: While other cormorants often fly long distances to find fish, their Galapagos counterpart has lost this skill completely. Not only because it has food right on its doorstep in the Galapagos, but especially because it hasn’t any predators from which it needs to flee. Today, the Galapagos cormorant just has short, stubby wings, completely useless for flying. However, everything happens for a reason: its lack of wings makes it extremely streamlined under water. It has also grown increasingly strong and large, enabling it to dive deeper and longer for fish. The Galapagos cormorant is now the world’s largest cormorant.

Everglades National Park is an American national park that protects the southern twenty percent of the original Everglades in Florida. The park is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States, and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River. An average of one million people visit the park each year. Everglades is the third-largest national park in the contiguous United States after Death Valley and Yellowstone. UNESCO declared the Everglades & Dry Tortugas Biosphere Reserve in 1976, and listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1979, while the Ramsar Convention included the park on its list of Wetlands of International Importance in 1987. Everglades is one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.

Most national parks preserve unique geographic features; Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing 0.25 miles per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay. The park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere. Thirty-six threatened or protected species inhabit the park, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee, along with 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles. The majority of South Florida's fresh water, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the park.

Humans have lived for thousands of years in or around the Everglades. Plans arose in 1882 to drain the wetlands and develop the land for agricultural and residential use. As the 20th century progressed, water flow from Lake Okeechobee was increasingly controlled and diverted to enable explosive growth of the South Florida metropolitan area. The park was established in 1934, to protect the quickly vanishing Everglades, and dedicated in 1947, as major canal building projects were initiated across South Florida. The ecosystems in Everglades National Park have suffered significantly from human activity, and restoration of the Everglades is a politically charged issue in South Florida.

Snowy owls live a life full of mystery up in the Arctic. Thousands of years ago, they built a community of fate with their neighbors – lemmings. About every four years, lemmings proliferate in huge numbers. This way, snowy owls have enough feed for their young. The owls lay up to eleven eggs and can successfully raise the chicks – each of them needs two to four lemmings per day. Lately, however, lemmings’ mass reproduction hasn’t been as regular in some parts of the Tundra. What will happen to them and the snowy owls? What is the ecological link here? And what will happen if one year the winter arrives way too early?

The best way for many birds to adapt to the winter is to flee to the South. But lemmings can’t migrate and have to endure temperatures as low as -40°C. Meanwhile, if the winter is too cold and the snow level too high, even the perfectly adapted owls have to migrate in order to survive. A fascinating journey from the Arctic to Central Europe begins. Following the owls on this uncommon path, the viewer learns how animals adapt to the inhospitable climate conditions, what ecological restraints bear down on the northern fauna and which fantastic survival strategies the animals can develop.

The ocean can be an unforgiving place. Animals living in the sea constantly have to deal with finding food, and protecting themselves from predators. There are many ways of hiding, defending, and feeding, and every different technique has advantages for different animals. For example, some animals use camouflage to escape detection or to sneak up on their prey, while other animals have coloration which intentionally makes them stand out. Some creatures hide from predators, while others stay in groups, out in the open, relying on safety in numbers. Some animals have dangerous spines or venom for protection, but even the most venomous creatures must sometimes be wary of predators. Different animals have taken advantage of different food sources, some feeding at the top of the food chain, and others at the bottom. Protecting themselves underwater is also a matter of invention and reinvention, and aquatic animals deploy an array of strategies just to stay alive. They have quite the toolbox to dip into – Evolutionary strategies such as colour and camouflage, toxins and teeth! Nudibranchs, clown fish, squid, octopus and orca whales are just some of the wonderful winners in the underwater race of life. Underwater footage shot in the wild, demonstrates vividly how these ocean creatures have evolved to survive by adapting to their environment.

Myanmar is dominated by the mighty Ayeyarwady River. The river, which is over 2170 km long and spans the entire country, is the country's lifeline and main transport artery. Since time untold, it has shaped the cultural development of the region.

Even during the Colonial Period, the small city of Bhamo was already the last outpost in the north of the country and the final stop of the Irrawaddy steamboats, as the river is navigable only up to here. Early in the morning an old, run-down government ferry departs downstream, passing the "Second Gorge" of the Ayeyarwady.
Domesticated work elephants are an everyday sight here, and they are trained in the village of Wei Ma. Not far away, the shores of the Ayeyarwady are mined for gold. From Katha, the first small town on the river's upper reaches, the British once governed all of "Upper Burma". The English author George Orwell was stationed here as a police officer.
Early in the morning a privately run "express boat" disembarks, run by a 27-year-old young woman. She dreads the dangerous early morning fog, for the Ayeyarwady may be wide but it is not deep – and migrating shoals lurk everywhere.
A day's journey downstream is the village of Myit Tan Gyi, a "dolphin village". Here, a school of freshwater dolphins helps the fishermen with their work. The dolphins herd the fish together and signal with their dorsal fin when the nets should be tossed.
Mandalay. The second largest city of Myanmar, and former and final capital of the Kingdom of Burma, is enchanting: it is surrounded by temples and monasteries. Ms. San San Shwe, 30 years old, heads a business here that exists only in Mandalay. Her "gold beaters" hammer out the super-thin gold leaf used to adorn the Buddha statues of the country.
In Mandalay, the 24-year-old Monk Owen teaches Buddhist critical thinking at a monastery-run school. He takes a boat trip with his students to the hills of Sagaing, the country's center of Buddhist teaching – 8,000 monks and nuns live here high above the Ayeyarwady River.

For decades, it's been done by baiting, or “chumming” – attracting sharks with food. This practice is being questioned and banned in many countries because of a dramatic increase in shark attacks.
In April 2012, a champion South African surfer was killed by a great white and shark tourism operators and documentary filmmakers were blamed. They were chumming in the area at the time of the attack. In Western Australia, 5 deaths are attributed to white sharks in just the first 6 months of 2012. Three surfers have also been killed by the sharks recently in California - more deadly attacks in a year than in the past dozen years combined. And the sharks have even been spotted as far north as Canada and a swimmer was attacked in Massachusetts. What's going on?

He possibly spends more hours underwater than on land. He describes the biodiversity off the two reefs at the east and west coast of Australia as a symphony of the ocean. It teaches us to understand not only the animals but also our own humans variety of species as a miracle. Nature does not know man made rules and religions and it is anything but a happy wonderland. The species have developed her own methods of surviving. Pauls cinematic concert is asking the spectator to think about wrong or right, good and bad, stupidity and cleverness in the world of plants and creatures of the ocean.

With the aid of modern technology, we reveal the unknown behaviour of some unusual species of shark: lemon sharks and their white-tip reef counterparts.

Our film trip begins in the Bahamas. To be more precise: in the turquoise-blue waters of the Grand Bahama Bank, in an exactly fixed location. In the spring, 70 - 80 pregnant lemon sharks arrive here. This huge shark population was first discovered just a few years ago by shark researcher, Professor Sam Gruber.
Many of the females are tired and rest on the seabed. Pregnant tiger sharks swim in the midst of this group. Without any protection whatsoever, our cameramen shoot their footage, surrounded by sharks and succeed in capturing images hitherto unseen.

We continue our journey to Gainesville, Florida, to meet Gordon Hubbell, the leading shark denture expert with the world’s largest shark denture collection. He knows everything about the evolutionary history of the lemon sharks, in addition to those of the white-tip reef variety off Cocos Island, Costa Rica. Here, we encounter large schools of fish, unprecedented numbers of stingrays, as well as hammerhead sharks. However, it is the white-tip reef sharks that make the biggest impression. Their performance begins late at night. Marauding, they patrol in large groups through the reefs and hunt everything that moves. Scales and dead prey fish float above the reef - a welcoming change of diet for the ubiquitous barracudas.

Sardinia has always been the epitome of pure wilderness, an emerald of volcanic origin in the Mediterranean. 1900 meters of coastline and an infinite maze of offshore islands. But Sardinia also has other facets: green valleys, rugged mountains, murmuring brooks, mysterious ruins and a unique fauna.

Just off of Sardinia's coast is an untouched underwater paradise - uniquely beautiful, but also dangerous. Pilot whales, dolphins and mobula rays populate the waters at Capo Testa in the north of the island. In the west, the lagoons of Cabras represent a wild landscape of lakes in which thousands of flamingos live and hunt the red brine shrimps. In addition to the flamingos, grey and purple herons and little egrets breed here. Thousands of bats have found refuge in the craggy mountain world of the Supramonte and Gennargentu, with their countless grottoes and caves.

In the sea we can observe the mass mating of sea slugs, and thanks to our camera robots and submersible boats we were able to observe beard worms with luminous red gills, as well as bright yellow tree corals in the area surrounding the hypothermal lava holes.

In the Feeding Grounds of the Humpback Whales | Ocean Documentary

In the warm Pacific just off the coast of Maui, a humpback whale mother has paired and given birth to her baby. Now the time has come, whereby she has to take her baby on a 5.500-kilometre-long journey to the feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska. The mother has already lost 30% of its weight, but she still has to constantly feed her calf.

Their destination is in Alaska's south, where the whale mother will hunt herrings with the other humpback whales. Together they create so-called air nets and surround the herrings: This is known as bubble net feeding. Orcas go fishing here for herrings, too, but also hunt down whale calves.

Again and again, prior to each bubble net, one can hear the humpback whales singing. This is drowned out only by the sounds of thousands of seagulls that nest in the cliffs close by. Employing various tricks and much to the consternation of the humpback whales, puffins and northern sea lions attempt to benefit from the prey in the bubble net.
In the south of the bay, belugas have arrived at the salmon rivers, in order to hunt salmon. We manage to dive and capture them on camera.
In contrast to the humpbacks, they are extremely tame and enjoy con-tact with humans. A unique cat-and-mouse game begins.

Myanmar is dominated by the mighty Ayeyarwady River. The river, which is over 2170 km long and spans the entire country, is the country's lifeline and main transport artery. Since time untold, it has shaped the cultural development of the region.

Nearby the former royal capital of Mandalay lies the village of Kyauk Maung, the nation's ceramics centre. Here, the ceramics dealer Ma Pa Hlaing loads her goods onto a ship that will spend almost the next two months travelling downriver.
It is the "Mya-Ayeya", the largest vessel on the Ayeyarwady, a floating supermarket that travels up and down Burma's great river four times a year. Consisting of two barges secured to a 100-year-old, two-story ferry, the "Mya-Ayeya" is a familiar sight to every child. Ma Pa Hlaing has always sold her wares on the floating supermarket.
When the boat approaches a village, the "market boat song" sounds out from the ship's loudspeakers. Then the market is held until ten o'clock at night – a sensation for the nearby villages. Unfortunately, word has it that the government wants to retire the market boat – with the opening of Myanmar, the focus is now on road construction.
Finally, the market boat arrives at her home port. Yangon, called Rangoon by the former colonial powers, is the largest city in the country. The historic colonial old town is located directly at the harbour, or "Downtown". Nowhere else in the world are there as many colonial structures found in such a small area as here, most of them in prime locations. Many are still in use as schools, hospitals or courts. But investors from all over the world are buying them up – they want to tear these colonial heirlooms down to build high-rises and skyscrapers. The film roams through Yangon with the young architect Claire, a heritage preservation consultant for a government that has little experience in monument protection.
The film leaves Yangon in the company of a small puppet troupe. Just before the mouth of the Ayeyarwady, the river branches off into a network of small rivers and channels: the Ayeyarwady delta area, a unique world of water. And there, where the longest arm of the river meets the Bay of Bengal, stands the last golden pagoda of the Ayeyarwady River, the Maw Tin Pagoda. Once a year, the great temple festival is held here

Everyone needs a place to live, but some aren't happy with the great outdoors, they look for some home comforts - they use extraordinary specialist building skills to construct the perfect home. Homes have many uses. They can prove a bolthole to escape predators, a safe nursery in which to raise young, a food store and a shelter from bad weather.

Animals of many shapes and sizes build their own homes. Perhaps the biggest construction projects are those undertaken by ants. Hundreds of thousands work together to construct their home.
Small mammals are expert diggers. Meerkats and hamsters both excavate elaborate tunnels where they can stay out of harm's way and raise their young, though the hamster likes to work alone while the meerkats prefer to have the company of an entire clan.

When it comes to making a nursery, it’s birds who steal the show. In just a few days they can construct a basket of twigs - a nest that can support their growing family and keep them out of harm's way.
There is one other good builder in the animal kingdom - us. Did we learn our skills from the animal home builders?

England's Most Beautiful Destination: The Lake District | Free Nature Documentary

For anyone looking for England's most beautiful view, here is where to strike gold: the Lake District. Framed between gently rising mountains of England's northwest, lay dozens of lakes with crystal clear water.
Apart from the magnificent view, at the Honister Pass the brave at heart can experience the breathtaking excitement of the mountains.
Visitors hover over the gorge on a steel cable. The zip wire is the at-traction of the mountain, which houses an old, yet still active slate mine. The Lake District has profited from slate for many years and the majority of the roofs of the region are covered with it. In the old town-ship of Grasmere, the grey of the houses contrasts with the green of the landscape - a wonderfully idyllic spot.

On the western border of the Lake District, Muncaster Castle stands out between the mountains. The undead are said to walk through the walls after sunset and visitors have told of the inexplicable wailing of a child, seemingly emanating from the walls.
The Penningtons have lived here since 1208 - and with them, their strange company.

Following the trails of the Alpine Ibex and other animals who find refuge in the wild mountains of south tyrol. The Alpine ibex is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps.
After being extirpated from most areas by the 19th century, the Alpine ibex was successfully reintroduced to parts of its historical range. All individuals living today descend from the stock in Gran Paradiso National Park in Aosta Valley and Piemonte (Italy), a national park created to help the ibex thrive. The species is currently listed as of least concern by the IUCN, but went through a population bottleneck of fewer than 100 individuals during its near-extinction event. This has led to very low genetic diversity across populations.

Deserts are dry. Deserts are extreme. True deserts get less than 18 cm of rain per year. True deserts have very few plants. Semi-desert habitats have enough rainfall to support more plant and animal life. Either way, deserts are not easy places for animals to live. Desert animals have evolved to handle the desert's heat and lack of water. They have adapted their bodies and behaviors to the desert climate. Most can survive on small amounts of water and many get all of their water from their food. Some drink maybe once a week and travel considerable distances to find isolated waterholes and springs. Large animals seek shade during the hottest part of the day. Some animals dig a hollow depression into the ground and lie in the cooler soil while others are nocturnal. Many reptiles and other animals protect themselves from the extreme temperature by spending their time in burrows. The scorpion is one of the most ancient creatures on earth, in existence since life first crawled out of the sea. One look and you can see why they’re born survivors. Not only are their bodies armoured against the desert heat – and other predators – but all scorpions have pincers at the front and a poisonous sting at the end of their tail. Rattlesnakes can be two meters long. They’re fast, tough and with a deadly venom, making them one of the most dangerous snakes in the world. But nobody seems to have told the Roadrunner, who regard rattlesnakes as quite suitable prey.

The North Sea stands for storm floods, vast tidal landscapes, high dunes and rugged coasts; it’s also one of the most important intersections for bird migration. All year round, her beaches attract not only holidaymakers but also countless seals. The North Sea is extraordinarily varied and surprisingly unknown, her diversified underwater world often hardly accessible. In over 2000 days of shooting above and below the water, the team has collected footage of the rarely filmed and spectacular: only a few days every year, basking sharks, at up to seven metres long the second-largest fish in the sea, surface off the white cliffs of Dover. In the Norwegian fjords lurks the even rarer Greenland Shark. They age anciently and skulk their way through the ice-cold deep sea mostly blind. Every spring in Holland, massive squids meet up to mate and spawn.

The German North Sea also has much to offer: one can encounter porpoises, the smallest of all the whales, off the island of Sylt, with its young. They are mostly mistaken for dolphins and are extremely difficult to film. On the beach of Helgoland, grey seals stage their spectacular fighting on a few days each year. And last but not least: the Wadden Sea. It is among the most productive environments on earth. In spring and autumn, flocks of migratory birds stage breathtaking air-shows over the North Sea – like we’ve never seen before.
